UK's first No Ego Urban Challenge hits the streets of Cumbria

Posted on: 3rd April 2013

Competitors hungry for a gruelling challenge will take to the streets of Carlisle on 21st July 2013 in the UK's first No Ego 'Urban' Challenge.

The No Ego Urban Challenge Carlisle is a high adrenaline 10K adventure/obstacle race set in and around the historical city and incorporates man made and city landmarks as well as natural obstacles to test competitor's stamina.

The No Ego Urban Challenge Carlisle will start and finish at the Sheepmount Athletic Stadium and will incorporate a series of obstacle zones with off road, trail, park and tarmac paths in between.  Competitors are invited to tackle over twenty obstacles which include climbing buses, tackling tyre mazes and plunging into freezing water tanks.  The No Ego Urban Challenge course will follow a route from the Sheepmount Stadium, past the River Eden and through Rickerby Park; taking in some other well know sites around the city in which competitors will contend with multiple terrains ranging from flat tarmac to slippery mud hills.

We has developed these adventure races over the past few years and have been inspired by some of the great adventure races in the States but we wanted to create an event that was aimed at everyone; not just elite competitors and has a family feel that the whole community gets involved in.

Brian (the No Ego Challenge organiser) comments, “I was involved in community soccer tournaments for years in America.  Everyone got involved, from mums and dads, local businesses to the young and old.  There was a lovely vibe at these events and this is something I think is missing from adventure sports in the UK.  As the name suggests the No Ego Challenge is about leaving your ‘ego’ at home and giving it a go.  This challenge is not only for elite athletes, but for couples, teams raising money for charity, people of all ages and about getting across the finish line to really achieve something that people feel proud of”

We have been working closely with Carlisle Leisure Services and Carlisle City Council to plan the route and ensure the event is going to be the race of the year in Carlisle, if not in Cumbria.  We hope the event will grow each year, with thousands of competitors visiting the city from across the UK; there have already been several entries from people outside Cumbria.

We have also been contacting sports groups across Carlisle and the local area to be part of race HQ.  On the day there will be a ‘race village’ where spectators can watch sports demonstrations, join teams, eat, drink and take in the race atmosphere whilst cheering on loved ones.  There will also be a mini race for younger entrants, who can take on the ‘mini’ No Ego Challenge at the Sheepmount.  Sports groups, charities and community groups are welcome to get in touch to be part of the day and make sure this an annual event for Carlisle.
