New Challenge puts racing enthusiasts in the dark

Posted on: 28th January 2013

The No Ego Challenge returns to Cumbria with the first race of the year; a Head Torch ‘mud’ challenge taking place at Whinlatter Forest on 9th March 2103…in the dark!

No Ego Challenges are a series of gruelling and tough ‘mud’, ‘street’ and ‘beach’ challenge runs that are designed to push competitors to the max.  The first ever No Ego ‘Mud’ Challenge took place in October 2012 at Greystoke Castle.  Since then, event organisers have been working round the clock to find the muddiest, most challenging and gruelling locations for their series of challenge races for 2013.

The Whinlatter 5 mile head torch race on 9th March will be the first challenge in 2013, with other dates throughout the North West to be announced soon. This is the first head torch race to take place at Whinlatter Forest, a mecca for mountain bikers and trail runners, which takes place at dusk on the slopes, tracks and trails through the forest.

Race director, Brian Lee comments
“Head torch racing is fun and challenging, but I advise people not to forget their sense of humour! They will get dirty so should be prepared.  It is a fantastic location to host the first No Ego Challenge of 2013; as one of the best recreation areas in Europe and it’s on our doorstep. It will be held in the dark, over rugged terrain and trails so should be great fun.”

Living in the USA for over ten years, Cumbrian businessman Brian Lee returned to the UK to develop the No Ego Challenges which are designed to test competitor’s stamina, strength and agility and are not for the feint hearted or in this case those scared of the dark!

Anyone can run a No Ego Challenge as long as they are fit and healthy and there is fitness schedule is available on the NO Ego Challenge web site to help with competitor’s training.  The race at Whinlatter forest is open to anyone over the age of 16, both men and women.  All adventure races have a common goal, the promotion of fitness and healthy outdoor activity. Once people have raced in an adventure race, ordinary road racing seems boring.

To enter the first No Ego Challenge in the dark on the 9th March 2013 competitors must register online or download the entry form online.  Entry to this No Ego Challenge is £12.  Participants should come prepared with trail/running shoes and a head torch.  Find out more or enter online here
